Overview

Edit layered PSD and PSB files with familiar Photoshop-style workflows. Patchy supports editable text, masks, layer styles, Smart Objects, and non-destructive image tools across desktop and browser.

About

Patchy is a local image editor for layered PSD and PSB files, with workflows familiar to Photoshop users. It aims to keep text, vector shapes, masks, layer styles, and Smart Objects editable when opening layered projects. It includes non-destructive adjustment layers and Smart Filters, brushes and retouching tools, path and vector editing, rich text, selections, Camera Raw development, and export to common image formats. Desktop builds are available for Windows, macOS, and Linux, with a browser build for modern browsers. Desktop versions have more memory available and add printing, scanner and camera import, and command-line automation. Patchy processes images locally. The project says it does not use telemetry, tracking, or upload images. The browser build runs through WebAssembly, and some features and limits differ from desktop. Patchy is an independent, open-source project released under the MIT license. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by Adobe.

Good for

  • — Opening layered PSD and PSB files while keeping common elements editable
  • — Making non-destructive edits with layers, masks, adjustment layers, and Smart Filters
  • — Painting, retouching, editing paths, and working with rich text
  • — Editing images locally on desktop or in a browser

Limitations

  • — PSD compatibility varies by feature and file; some unsupported Smart Filters remain preview-locked
  • — CMYK and Lab files convert to RGB when opened, and editing is in RGB color modes
  • — GPU acceleration is not available
  • — The browser build supports up to 16 bits per channel; desktop builds support up to 32
  • — Some desktop features, including printing and scanner or camera import, are not available in the browser build
